A new Swiss law targeting Hamas and affiliated organisations is set to take effect on May 15, the government announced on Wednesday. The legislation is aimed at preventing the Palestinian militant group from using Switzerland as a haven by simplifying the implementation of entry bans and expulsions.Approved by the Swiss parliament in December 2023, the law was introduced following Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. According to the government, this law provides authorities with the “necessary tools to combat Hamas activities or support for the organisation within Switzerland.”
The Gaza conflict erupted after the October attack, which left 1,200 people dead and led to 251 hostages being taken to Gaza, according to Israeli reports. In response, Israel’s offensive on Gaza has resulted in over 52,000 deaths, based on local Palestinian health officials’ accounts.
The new legislation also enables preventive actions by Swiss authorities, such as imposing entry bans or carrying out expulsions. Additionally, it aims to restrict Hamas’ ability to use Switzerland as a financial hub for its operations. Also Read: Hamas says it accepts a new Gaza ceasefire proposal but Israel makes a counter-offer
