Tallest Ram idol in North America unveiled in Canada’s Mississauga

A 51-foot statue of Lord Ram — the tallest of its kind in North America — was unveiled at the Hindu Heritage Centre in Mississauga, Ontario.The inauguration of the idol happened on Sunday, August 3, the Hindustan Times reported. The fibreglass idol, constructed in Delhi and assembled by skilled artisans in Canada, now stands as a landmark for the Indian diaspora.

The inauguration ceremony drew a crowd of over 10,000 people.

Inspiration and significance

The installation marks the culmination of a four-year-long effort inspired by the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Uttar Pradesh’s Ayodhya. The idol was made possible through a donation from Indo-Canadian business leader Laj Prasher, as per HT.

The structure, engineered with a steel frame, is designed to endure wind speeds up to 200 km per hour and is expected to last at least 100 years.

Acharya Surinder Sharma Shastri, Founder of Hindu Heritage Centre, described the statue as a “spiritual gift to the community.”

Landmark in more ways than one

Kushagr Sharma, principal organiser of the event, said, “This event was not just celebration of our faith, but a proud moment for all Canadians who value cultural harmony and spiritual heritage.”

Due to its location near Toronto Pearson International Airport, the statue is now among the first landmarks visible to arriving passengers.
