In a post on the social media platform X, the Income Tax Department wrote, “The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has decided to extend the specified date for filing various audit reports for the Previous Year 2024–25 (Assessment Year 2025–26), from 30th September 2025 to 31st October 2025, for assessees referred to in clause (a) of Explanation 2 to sub-section (1) of section 139 of the Act.”
Requests for tax audit deadline extension
The extension comes after the CBDT received requests from various professional associations, including chartered accountant bodies, highlighting difficulties faced by taxpayers and practitioners in completing audit reports on time.
According to the tax body, the deadline extension requests were made citing reasons, including disruptions caused by floods and natural calamities in parts of the country, which have impacted normal business and professional activities. This issue has also been raised before the high courts. As many as 30 writ petitions have been filed in different high courts across the country requesting an order to extend the due date.
The Jodhpur bench of the Rajasthan High Court had previously directed the government and the CBDT to extend the deadline for submitting the tax audit report from September 30 to October 31. The Karnataka High Court also asked the CBDT to extend the due date to October 31.
The All India Federation of Tax Practitioners (AIFTP) had also asked the CBDT to push the deadline for submitting tax audit reports to 31 October, PTI reported.
Income tax e-filing portal working smoothly
The CBDT also confirmed that the Income-tax e-filing portal is functioning smoothly, with no technical issues, and that the tax audit reports are being uploaded successfully. Until September 23, 2025, around 4,02,000 tax audit reports and more than 7.57 crore ITRs were filed.
