Texas continues to reel from the catastrophic effects of a flash flood that wrecked a flooding prone region of the state in the morning of Fourth of July.

Several hours of heavy rain on early Friday (July 4) caused dramatic rise in water levels that eventually an already flooding prone area of Texas Hill Country resulted in a fatal flash flood. The region recorded more than 12 inches (30 centimeters) of rain fell on Friday, according to AP. (Image: Reuters)

At least 82 are believed dead in the catastrophic flash flood, according to AP. This includes 27 girls and counselors who were at Camp Mystic, a popular riverside Christian camp for girls in Hunt, Texas. (AP)

Emergency responders still searching for dozens of missing people. “Our hearts are broken alongside our families that are enduring this unimaginable tragedy,” the camp said in a statement on Monday, July 7. Now National Weather Service has come under scrutiny for their lack of efficiency. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer asked on Monday, July 7 that an investigation be carried into whether funding cuts from the Trump administration affected the forecasting agency’s response to catastrophic flooding. He has asked that a probe be carried out if lack of staffing of the agency’s San Antonio office caused “delays, gaps, or diminished accuracy” in forecasting the flooding.

Celebrities like Shakira, Khloe Kardashian, and Matthew McConaughey have come forward in support and solidarity of the victims. Shakira took to social media to announce she will donate proceeds from her San Antonio concert to Catholic Charities of San Antonio to support disaster relief for affected families. Hollywood actor and Texas native Matthew McConaughey urged netizens to lend their support in every way possible. (Image: AP)
