Trump says he threatened India and Pakistan with 250% tariff to stop the war

Date:

United States President Donald Trump on Wednesday, October 29, said that he had threatened India and Pakistan with 250% tariffs on both the countries in order to stop the war.Addressing the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEOs Summit in South Korea’s Gyeongju, Trump claimed that he had a role to stop the conflict between the two countries, adding that he stopped eight wars since assuming office in January 2025.

“I said I was going to put 250% tariffs on each country, which means that you’ll never do business. There’s nothing that you can sell for 250%. That’s a nice way of saying, ‘We don’t want to do business with you.’ You don’t have to say, ‘We don’t want to do business.’ That’s nasty,” Trump said. “They understood that, and within 48 hours we had no war, no people killed. It makes me feel so good. We saved millions of lives,” he added.

The US President further went to praise Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistan’s PM Shehbaz Sharif calling them “great” guys. He also called PM Modi as a “tough” and “killer” guy.

“That will get done too. I thought that was going to be an easy one because of my relations with Russian President Putin, but it turned out to be different,” the US President said.

“I think it’ll get done. However, that wouldn’t have ever started if I were a president (at that time),” Trump added.

This is not the first time that Trump has claimed to have mediated the India and Pakistan conflict that lasted for four days from May 7 to May 10, after India had launched Operation Sindoor, targetting the terrorist infrastructure and base camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) in retaliation to the Pahalgam terror attack of April 22 that left 26 people dead.

India has maintained that there was no mediation by any country to stop the war and a ceasefire ‘understanding’ was reached after Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) requested to halt the military actions with his Indian counterpart.
