Following China’s retaliatory salvo on the US-China trade negotiations, the US President Donald Trump appears to have softened his stance on China as per his cryptic social media post on June 4, declaring admiration for the Chinese President Xi Jinping. On May 30thTrump had accused China of breaching preliminary trade deal terms agreed after a suspension on most tariffs. However, in a surprise turn of events, China countered, claiming that it was the US who violated the agreed deal, and the Asian nation further vowed to defend its interests.
In the post, Trump expressed admiration for Xi but added that the Chinese leader was “very tough” and “extremely hard to make a deal with”.
Since the global tariffs announcement in April, which shocked the markets worldwide, the two countries arrived at a temporary tariff agreement on 12 May. However, it was short-lived.Meanwhile, the tariffs have faced setbacks in the home country with a three-judge panel of the trade court on 28 May ruling that Trump exceeded the authority granted him by a 1977 emergency law in imposing his “Liberation Day” global tariffs and other sweeping levies.

A temporary relief came via a federal appeals court ruling, which paused the sweeping ruling against global tariffs while it takes time to consider the administration’s request for a longer-lasting hold.
The appeals court order effectively paused the block on tariffs and gave the administration 10 days to unwind the levies.
