US President Donald Trump has said in a cryptic social media post that China breached preliminary trade deal terms agreed after a suspension on most tariffs. “China has totally violated its agreement with us,” Trump said in the post which elaborated that the President struck a “fast deal” with China to save them from a bad situation. In April, Trump announced the global levies, shocking the global markets. However, the US-China tariff war came to a brief halt after both parties arrived at a tariff agreement on 12 May.
Describing the impact of tariffs on China as being ‘devastating’, President Trump went on to add that the deal stabilised things and China got back to business.
Trump ended his commentary with a remark: “So much for being Mr. Nice Guy!”, hinting possibly at a harsher stance against China.Meanwhile, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in an interview with Fox News on 29 May said that the trade talks with China are “a bit stalled”.

Tariff court battle takes another twist
On the other hand, a federal appeals court has temporarily paused the sweeping ruling against Trump’s global tariffs while it takes more time to consider the administration’s request for a longer-lasting hold.
The latest order effectively pauses the block on tariffs and gives the administration 10 days to unwind the levies.
On 28 May, a three-judge panel of the trade court in a surprise ruling held that Trump exceeded the authority granted him by a 1977 emergency law in imposing his “Liberation Day” global tariffs and other sweeping levies.
