‘Turn the volume up’, Zohran Mamdani takes a dig at Trump after NY Mayor election win

Date:

New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has taken a sharp jibe at US President Donald Trump in his victory speech. The 34-year-old leader will become New York City’s youngest mayor since 1892.In his victory speech, Mamdani also thanked the city residents for electing him as the first Indian-American Muslim and the youngest mayor of the city.

Mamdani, who entered the mayoral race in 2024, secured his win over former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican nominee Curtis Silwa.

In a fiery victory speech, Mamdani, who described himself as Trump’s worst nightmare, delivered a four-word message to “despot” President Trump, according to a report by The Independent.Addressing President Trump directly, he said, “If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him. And if there is any way to terrify a despot, it is by dismantling the very conditions that allowed him to accumulate power.”

“So, Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: Turn the volume up,” Mamdani said.

“Thank you to the new generation of New York. We’ll fight for you because we are you. The future is in our hands. My friends, we have toppled a political dynasty,” he added.

After Mamdani’s landmark victory in the mayoral race, President Trump also made a cryptic remark. In a post on Truth Social, he wrote, “…and so it begins!”

Additionally, he explained why Republicans lost. In another post on his social media platform, Trump said, “Trump wasn’t on the ballot, and shutdowns were the two reasons that Republicans lost elections tonight, according to Pollsters.”

Meanwhile, Mamdani also wished his main competitor, Andrew Cuomo, “the best in private life”. “But let tonight be the last time I utter his name, as we abandon a politics that answers to the few,” the 34-year-old lawmaker said.

While declaring his victory, the Indian-origin politician said, “On January 1, I will be sworn in as mayor of New York City.”

He also quoted India’s first Prime Minister, Jawahar Lal Nehru’s ‘Tryst with Destiny’ speech in his address. Repeating his campaign pledges, he said, “In this moment of darkness, New York will be the light.”
