Gabbard also shared that her first stop is Honolulu, where she will “visit IC partners and INDOPACOM leaders.” She will meet with US military personnel participating in training exercises, officials at US Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM), and partners in the US intelligence community.
Gabbard, an Army veteran and former legislator, has strong ties to the Indo-Pacific.
She served as a Democrat from 2013 to 2021, representing Hawaii’s 2nd congressional district, before joining the Republican Party in 2024.
Gabbard will attend a security conference in India the following week as part of her tour, The New York Times reported. This is her second international trip as a high-ranking official in the Trump administration.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi invited Gabbard to speak at the Raisina conference, a global assembly of security professionals in Delhi, on March 18. The event will also mark the conclusion of Gabbard’s Asia tour.
Senior Russian security officials and experts often attend the Raisina conference. However, it’s uncertain if Gabbard will have bilateral meetings with Russian officials during the summit.
According to a senior administration official, Gabbard planned to discuss similar topics like cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, counterterrorism, and information sharing in India.
Her trip to India comes following PM Modi’s February trip to the US. During his visit, PM Modi referred to Gabbard as a ‘strong votary’ of the US and India partnership.
Gabbard referred to welcoming PM Modi as an ‘honour,’ and expressed her enthusiasm for further enhancing the partnership between the US and India.
