“I love the people of India. We’re working on some great deals between our countries. I spoke to Prime Minister Modi today and we just have a very good relationship,” PM Modi told reporters at the White House.
“He’s not going to buy much oil from Russia. He wants to see that war end as much as I do. He wants to see the war between Russia and Ukraine to end. They’re not going to be buying too much oil. So they’ve cut it way back, and they’re continuing to cut it way back,” he added.

Prime Minister Modi appreciated the call from Trump but did not mention discussions related to buying Russian oil. However, he highlighted the cooperation of both India and the US in combating terrorism.
“Thank you, President Trump, for your phone call and warm Diwali greetings. On this festival of lights, may our two great democracies continue to illuminate the world with hope and stand united against terrorism in all its forms,” PM Modi said in a statement on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, Oct 22.The US President celebrated Diwali at the White House, with India’s Ambassador to the US, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, also in attendance, along with US officials.
“Deeply honoured to join President Donald J. Trump at the White House today to celebrate Diwali. Wished him on behalf of Prime Minister Narendra Modi a Happy Diwali and thanked him for this beautiful gesture,” Kwatra said on X.
“Warm Diwali greetings to all celebrating, especially the vibrant 5 million-strong Indian diaspora in the US,” he added.
US President Trump has been continuously making remarks that India has agreed to lower the purchase of oil from Russia, while citing that India’s oil trade has been fuelling the Ukraine conflict. In a bid to pressure India, President Trump also imposed 50% tariffs on imports of Indian goods.
However, India has maintained that it purchases energy on the basis of what markets have to offer, and it is also in discussions with the US to enhance its energy procurements.
