“In India, the Vice President will hold meetings with Prime Minister Modi and discuss shared economic and geopolitical priorities,” the statement said.
The trip comes as President Donald Trump’s administration continues to ratchet up tariffs on Chinese imports, igniting fears of a global economic slowdown. Trump recently announced a 90-day pause on the new reciprocal tariffs for most countries — excluding China — following mounting international pressure.Vance’s visit to India is expected to have both official and personal components, people familiar with the planning said. His meeting with Modi, likely to take place on April 21, is expected to cover various dimensions of the India–US relationship, including ongoing negotiations for a bilateral trade agreement (BTA) and concerns related to recent tariff policies.
Vance’s stop in India follows a visit by US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who met senior Indian leaders, including Prime Minister Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval.
A planned visit by US National Security Adviser Michael Waltz has been postponed, sources said, though it was initially expected to coincide with the Vice President’s travel.
Before arriving in India, Vance will travel to Italy, where he will meet Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Rome and hold discussions with Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin. He will also take part in ceremonial events in the lead-up to Easter Sunday at the Vatican.
The high-level engagements reflect deepening cooperation between India and the United States amid shifting global trade alignments and geopolitical tensions.
