‘What do the penguins sell to USA’: Donald Trump’s reciprocal tariffs spark meme fest

Date:

President Donald Trump announced a wave of retaliatory tariffs on Wednesday, April 2, targeting US trade partners all over the world, including uninhabited islands and other extremely remote areas. Calling April 2 ‘Liberation Day’, Trump said the US had been “looted, pillaged, and raped” by its trade partners for decades. The US President imposed extensive reciprocal tariffs on countries and territories, including 26% on India, 34% on China and 37% on Bangladesh, among others.
As soon as the President announced the list of reciprocal tariffs, social media was flooded with memes, with many sharing their hilarious takes on the issue.
Over the imposition of the tariffs on Heard Island and McDonald Islands, a user joked, “Trump has put a 10% tariff on the Heard Island and McDonald which has a population of ZERO people and is inhabited only by penguins. What do the penguins sell to the USA?”

“THE PENGUINS  of HEARD  AND MCDONALD ISLANDS WERE ROBBING US MAKING US PAY VERY HIGH TARIFFS AMERICA IS BACK,’ read another post.

On the 10% tariff on Ecuador, a user wrote, “Trump listed Ecuador as a currency manipulator even though Ecuador’s currency is…the US dollar.”

Referencing the famous Bollywood dialogue ‘Tareekh pe tareekh’, another user reacted to the 26% tariff on India and joked, ‘Tariff pe Tariff.’

In another post, a user shared a collage of four pictures, writing, “The Trump tariff meme thread.”

Another meme depicts the protagonists of the 2005 film Madagascar being astonished by the US’ decision to impose a 47% tariff on the East African country.

“Good news Trumpsters! You soon won’t notice how much your groceries cost because everything else is going to cost EVEN MORE,” wrote a user.

Under the new Trump plan, the US would impose a 27% tariff on Indian imports. Trump said the rate was calculated based on cumulative tariffs, including non-monetary barriers, imposed by a country on American goods. By this calculation, Trump said India imposes a 52% tariff on US goods.
