Trump, in his address, stressed the need for a formidable defence mechanism, drawing parallels to Israel’s existing Iron Dome system. He said his focus was on building the most powerful military of the future. “As a first step, I’m asking Congress to fund a state-of-the-art ‘Golden Dome’ missile defence shield to protect our homeland. All made in the USA,” he said.

The Golden Dome is a missile defence system to protect the US from threats like ballistic, hypersonic and cruise missiles, according to a report in Space News. It will use space-based sensors and interceptors to detect and stop attacks early, while ground and naval defences add extra protection. Advanced communication networks would ensure quick data sharing and fast responses.Gen. Michael Guetlein, vice chief of space operations of the US Space Force, said recent military operations in the Middle East are helping shape the plan. When Iran attacked Israel with missiles last year, US forces in the region helped intercept them and provided real-time intelligence and warnings to Israel.
An executive order signed on January 27 directs the Department of Defense to outline a roadmap for the system’s implementation within 60 days.
Golden Dome and Iron Dome: Differences
While the Golden Dome draws inspiration from Israel’s Iron Dome, the two systems serve fundamentally different purposes.
The Golden Dome is designed to provide nationwide protection, countering advanced missile threats. In contrast, Iron Dome is a regional defence system focused on intercepting short-range rockets and artillery shells targeting Israel.
In terms of technology, unlike the Iron Dome, which relies on ground-based radar and interceptors, the Golden Dome will integrate space-based sensors and interception capabilities.
The Iron Dome is deployed in locations across Israel to protect civilian areas and military installations. The Golden Dome aims to establish a layered defence network that spans the entirety of US airspace.
