Who is Hafiz Abdur Rauf? Pakistan’s ‘innocent man’ is a globally sanctioned terrorist

Date:

India has debunked Pakistan’s claim that Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist Hafiz Abdul Rauf is an ‘innocent man’.In a post on X, the Press Information Bureau’s Fact Check unit stated that Pakistan’s Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR) couldn’t be more wrong in claiming Rauf as an ‘innocent man’.
“Pakistan’s DG ISPR claims that the LeT terrorist Hafiz Abdur Rauf is an ‘Innocent Man’. DG ISPR’s ‘COMMON MAN’ is a Globally Sanctioned Terrorist – clearly visible in the viral terrorist funeral picture,” it wrote.

The PIB fact-check team mentioned the identity shared by Pakistan matches that of Rauf, who has been part of LeT’s senior leadership since at least 1999.

“The identity details shared by DG ISPR completely overlap with the details of Hafiz Abdur Rauf, a member of LeT’s senior leadership since at least 1999 and part of the US Sanctions List,” it added, along with a link to the US Sanctions List, which named Hafiz Abdur Rauf as a designated terrorist.

The clarification came after the US-designated global terrorist was seen in a viral video leading funeral prayers for terrorists killed in the Indian airstrikes during Operation Sindoor on May 7. These strikes were conducted to avenge the killings of 26 individuals in Pahalgam in April.

Who Is Hafiz Abdur Rauf?

A US-designated terrorist, Rauf has been an active member of the terrorist organisation Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). He is also the head of the now-banned Falah-e-Insaniyat Foundation (FIF). Both groups are sanctioned by the United States and the United Nations.

He has long been associated with LeT’s front organisation, Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD). Despite not being related by blood to the LeT founder Hafiz Saeed, the mastermind of the November 2008 Mumbai terror attack, he has worked closely with him for several years.

According to the US database, there are a number of addresses mentioned with his name. These include 4 Lake Road, Room No. 7 Choburji; Dola Khurd; 129 Jinnah Block, Awan Town, Multan Road and 5-Chamberlain Road — all in Pakistan’s Lahore — while 33, Street No. 3, Jinnah Colony, Tehsil Kabir Wala in District Khanewal.

The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) database also provides his National ID No: NIC 277-93-113495 and CNIC: 35202-5400413-9.

Rauf also had a Pakistani Passport CM1074131, which was issued to him on October 29, 2008 and expired in the year 2013. Additionally, another passport booklet, A7523531, was also issued to him by the country, according to US database.
