The last minute attempts have reportedly found to be fruitless as Mahdi’s brother Abdul Fatah Mahdi indicated family’s firm stance the death sentence ruling for Priya. The brother said that “justice would prevail” affirming that “retribution would come regardless of any delays in the execution” on social media, as per The Hindu.
He added that the family would not grant pardon and accept the blood money “in spite of interventions by anybody”. In an interview with BBC Arabic on July 14, Mehdi had reiterated the family’s demand for ‘Qisas’ – retributive justice according to the Shariat law, calling for Nimisha’s execution, as per India Today.Mahdi also reportedly denied the claims of Nimisha being tortured and abused by his brother along with withholding her passport, stating that all these are made up to portray a “convicted murderer as a victim”.
“We suffered not only due to the brutal crime but also from the prolonged and painful litigation process,” he was quoted as saying in the interview by India Today, rejecting the offers of the blood money.
In 2017, in efforts to escape and get her passport back from Talal Mahdi, Nimisha attempted to inject him with sedatives but he died due to an overdose. She was convicted of murder in 2018 with a death sentence.
Her appeals were rejected in 2020 and 2023. In 2024, the Yemen’s President confirmed her execution.

The Indian government have been trying to assist Nimisha’s family to save her from execution but the efforts have not resulted in any positive outcome.
