Earlier, on November 3, 2025, a powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck northern Afghanistan, according to the US Geological Survey. At least 10 people were killed and 150 others injured in that quake.The epicentre was located 22 kilometres (14 miles) west-southwest of Khulm at a depth of 28 km.

Earthquakes are common in Afghanistan, particularly along the Hindu Kush mountain range, where the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates meet.
On August 31, 2025, a magnitude 6.0 earthquake in eastern Afghanistan near the Pakistan border killed more than 2,200 people. On October 7, 2023, a magnitude 6.3 quake, followed by strong aftershocks, left at least 4,000 people dead, according to the Taliban government.
