A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck Japan on Wednesday, affecting the Amami Islands in Kagoshima Prefecture, according to preliminary assessments by the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) and other monitoring agencies.The quake caused strong shaking in southwestern Japan, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. No tsunami warning had been issued as of now.
Officials said the magnitude and other details could be updated as further assessments are completed.
Authorities advised residents to “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” during shaking. They also urged people to keep emergency kits with water, food, flashlights and first-aid supplies, secure heavy furniture, know evacuation routes and follow updates from the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), NIED and local authorities.(This is a developing story and will be updated soon)
