Date:

In the Union Budget 2025, the Finance Minister announced the extension of the Jal Jeevan Mission until 2028 with an enhanced total outlay, aiming to achieve 100% coverage of potable tap water connections across rural households.Finance minister in her budget speech said, “Since 2019, 15 crore households representing 80% of India’s rural population have been provided access to potable tap water connections under the Jal Jeevan Mission scheme.”Additionally, the government plans to sign separate MoUs with states and union territories to ensure the sustainability and efficiency of water service delivery, reinforcing its commitment to a water-secure future for all.

Launched in 2019 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Jal Jeevan Mission is an initiative aimed at ensuring clean and adequate drinking water for every rural household in India through individual tap connections. The scheme set an ambitious target of covering all rural households by 2024. But the government is yet to achieve this target.According to official data, by 27th January 2025, the government had provided tap water connections to 15,43,07,169 rural households out of a total of 19,36,93,328, achieving a coverage rate of 79.67%.In terms of funding, the budget estimate and actual expenditure for the financial year 2023-24 were identical. However, for the 2024-25 fiscal year, the government made only a marginal increase in the budget estimate, indicating a conservative approach to further allocations for the scheme. The allocation and expenditure for the scheme in the last few years (in ₹ cr)
