The parade was the first major show of strength since 2019, when China marked the 70th anniversary of the founding of communist rule. This time, it commemorated the end of WWII.
The event marked the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II and highlighted Beijing’s growing investment in land-, sea- and air-based weapons.
Around two dozen foreign dignitaries were invited, with Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un among those attending. Leaders from the US, Western Europe, Japan, India and South Korea stayed away.
China staged a large military parade in its capital, rolling out missiles, drones, fighter jets and other advanced equipment, much of it on public view for the first time.
The highly choreographed event was closed to the general public. Barriers kept residents a block away, commercial buildings along the route were shut, and only invited guests could watch in person.
President Xi Jinping, who leads both the Communist Party and the military as chairman of the Central Military Commission, stood at Tiananmen Square as troops marched in lockstep. He delivered a speech before the display, stressing national resilience and strength.
Kim travelled by train from Pyongyang, making his first visit to China since 2019 and his first time attending a multilateral event since taking power in 2011.
