Delhi-Mumbai Expressway’s Delhi link is now complete: Which routes open up, who benefits and what happens next?

A 9-km stretch between the DND Flyway and Jaitpur has opened for trial runs, completing Delhi’s direct link to the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and opening a faster route towards Faridabad, Ballabhgarh, Sohna and beyond. Full connectivity up to Vadodara is expected by December 2026, while a separate link to Noida International Airport is under development.A key missing link in the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway has now opened for trial, bringing Delhi directly onto the country’s longest access-controlled expressway.The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has opened the 9-km DND Flyway-Jaitpur stretch on a trial basis.Nearly 8.5 km of the section is elevated, and the trial run is expected to continue for about a month before formal commissioning. The development gives motorists from parts of Delhi, Noida and Ghaziabad a direct route towards the expressway.The new section is part of the 59-km DND-Faridabad-KMP link, which connects the DND Flyway with the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway through the Jaitpur-KMP interchange. Around 50 km of the Delhi link had already been opened in phases, while the DND-Jaitpur section was the remaining key connection.Which routes open up with the new stretch?The new road allows traffic entering from the Ring Road and DND Flyway near Sarai Kale Khan-Maharani Bagh to travel towards Faridabad through Jaitpur and Meethapur.For commuters from East and South Delhi, Noida and Ghaziabad, the route provides direct access to the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway without having to rely on the existing Ashram-Badarpur and Mathura Road corridors for the same journey.Traffic heading towards Faridabad, Ballabhgarh and Sohna could therefore shift to the new expressway link, potentially easing pressure on Ring Road and Mathura Road.The DND-Faridabad journey could take around 20 minutes on the new route, compared with more than 30 minutes through the existing Ashram-Badarpur stretch.The Jaitpur-KMP interchange is already operational, allowing traffic to connect further to the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal (KMP) Expressway and onwards towards the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway corridor.Why the DND-Jaitpur link mattersThe Delhi-Mumbai Expressway was originally planned to run from Sohna to Jawaharlal Nehru Port near Mumbai. The alignment was later extended towards the DND Flyway to provide a direct connection with Delhi.The latest opening effectively brings the expressway closer to the heart of Delhi and gives motorists an access-controlled route towards destinations on the expressway corridor.During the trial period, motorists are not being charged a toll, allowing NHAI to monitor traffic and identify any deficiencies before the stretch is formally commissioned.Full Delhi-Vadodara connectivity expected by December 2026The next major milestone is further south on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway.At a recent review meeting chaired by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, NHAI officials said the expressway is likely to become fully operational up to Vadodara by December, according to The Times of India.That would provide continuous expressway connectivity from Delhi through the completed sections towards Vadodara, although the entire Delhi-Mumbai corridor is a larger project with different stretches at different stages of completion.Delhi-Mumbai Expressway to connect with Noida airportThe road network around the expressway is also being expanded towards Noida International Airport at Jewar.The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said in May that the DND-Faridabad-Sohna Access Controlled Highway is being developed to provide seamless access to both Noida International Airport and the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. The six-lane corridor is designed to connect Delhi, Faridabad, Gurugram, Noida and Sohna.Separately, the Union Cabinet approved a modified alignment in March that includes an 11-km elevated link between Faridabad and Noida International Airport, with a revised estimated cost of ₹3,631 crore, according to the Times of India report.The airport link would add another connection between the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway network and the wider NCR road system.
