Donald Trump shares altered image showing Greenland, Canada, Venezuela as US territories

Date:

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday (January 20, 2026) shared an altered image of a map depicting Canada, Greenland and Venezuela as part of the United States. The image was posted on Trump’s social media platform Truth Social. It shows Trump seated inside the Oval Office with several European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, while pointing to a map that presents the three regions as US territories.
The image appears to be an altered version of an actual photograph from August 2025, when the US President was discussing the Ukraine war with European leaders.

The post comes amid heightened unease between the United States and its European allies over Trump’s repeated insistence that the US should take control of Greenland, citing national security concerns linked to Russia and China.

European nations have pushed back against the proposal. Reports said the disagreement has led to the US administration announcing a 10% sanction, with a warning that it could be raised to 25% later this year.
