The poll highlighted that Americans are dissatisfied with Trump’s handling of key issues, including the economy, immigration, and tariffs.
Trump’s lowest marks were on managing the federal government and tariffs, with 36% and 33% approval ratings, respectively. In contrast, his highest support was on Israel and Gaza, with 46% approving of his approach and 52% disapproving. The poll also revealed that most Americans see both the Democratic and Republican parties, as well as the president, as ‘out of touch’ with their lives.
Sixty-eight per cent of respondents agreed that Democrats are out of touch, while 61% and 63% said the same about the GOP and Trump, respectively. In a hypothetical midterm matchup, the poll found that 46% of registered voters would support the Democratic candidate, while 44% would back the Republican candidate. The difference falls within the margin of error, indicating a tight race.
According to a report in Newsweek, Trump’s job approval rating among white voters has reached its lowest point of his second term. As per the Economist/YouGov survey, 47% stated that they approve of the way Trump is handling his job as president, while 50% expressed disapproval.
The recent ratings come just ahead of the Supreme Court’s high-stakes hearing, which is scheduled for Wednesday, 5 November, to determine the legality of his sweeping global tariffs.
Earlier, the President said he would not run for vice president in the 2028 election, but declined to definitively say he would not seek a third term. On the possibility of a third term, he said, “I would love to do it. I have my best numbers ever.”
When asked by a reporter if he was ruling out a third term, he responded, Am I not ruling it out? I mean, you’ll have to tell me.”
His approval rating among white people and other groups is expected to change, particularly as the federal government shutdown persists. Other developments in the next months may also have an impact on his approval ratings leading up to the 2026 midterm election.
