European nations plan a US free naval coalition to secure the Strait of Hormuz after the conflict, aiming to protect oil shipping and stabilise energy markets.
European nations are working on a proposal to form a broad international coalition to secure shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuzincluding the deployment of mine-clearing and other naval assets, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal. However, the initiative is expected to be rolled out only after the ongoing conflict ends and notably without US participation, the report said.
Emmanuel Macron said the aim is to establish a defensive international mission excluding “belligerent” parties such as the US, Israel and Iran. Diplomats familiar with the discussions told WSJ that any European naval deployment would function independently rather than under American command.
The UK and France are seeking, through this initiative, to restore confidence among shipping companies to resume operations along the route once hostilities subside, the report added.
The proposal comes amid sustained disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit chokepoint, following weeks of conflict involving Iran, the US and Israel. Attacks on commercial vessels, mining threats and heightened naval activity have forced many firms to reroute or suspend operations, pushing up insurance costs and raising concerns over global energy supplies.
European capitals are increasingly wary of the economic fallout from a prolonged crisis, especially with energy markets sensitive to supply shocks. The push for a non-aligned mission also reflects efforts to position Europe as a stabilising force capable of safeguarding trade routes without being directly drawn into the conflict.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump said on Tuesday that a second round of talks between Washington and Tehran could take place within the next two days, indicating that Pakistan may again host the negotiations.
