FIIs sell shares worth ₹3,000 crore, DIIs nearly offset outflows with fresh buying

Foreign institutional investors remained net sellers of Indian equities on July 23, offloading shares worth ₹2,999.23 crore on a provisional basis, according to exchange data.Domestic institutional investors (DIIs), meanwhile, continued to support the market, purchasing equities worth a net ₹2,947.14 crore during the session on a provisional basis.

FIIs bought equities worth ₹11,472.08 crore but sold shares worth ₹14,471.31 crore, resulting in a net outflow of ₹2,999.23 crore. In comparison, DIIs purchased equities worth ₹16,575.30 crore and sold ₹13,628.16 crore, leading to net inflows of ₹2,947.14 crore.
However, the equity benchmark indices extended its losing streak to a fourth consecutive session on Thursday (July 23), with the Sensex falling 394 points to 76,365 and the Nifty declining 127 points to 23,870.

The broader market remained weak, with market breadth favouring declines as the advance-decline ratio stood at 1:2. The Nifty Bank index dropped 535 points to 56,592, while the Nifty Midcap index lost 616 points to end at 61,685.

Selling was broad-based, with 30 of the 50 Nifty stocks ending in the red. Adani Enterprises, Nestle India and Shriram Finance were among the biggest losers. Financial stocks remained under pressure amid moves in the rupee and bond yields.

Shares of oil-sensitive companies also declined as crude prices surged. Paint makers, oil marketing companies and InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo) fell around 2%, while HPCL also lost about 2%.Among stock-specific movers, SRF tumbled 8% after indicating that the second and third quarters could be weaker than the first. IndusInd Bank fell 6% despite reporting healthy June-quarter earnings, as cautious management commentary weighed on investor sentiment.

Separately the rupee ended largely unchanged against the US dollar, closing at 96.57/$ compared with the previous close.

Fund flow week so far

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) have remained net sellers in the equity market so far this week, with outflows recorded on three of the four trading sessions.

FIIs have sold equities worth ₹3,289.31 crore cumulatively from Monday to Thursday, after accounting for Tuesday’s buying.

Domestic institutional investors (DIIs), meanwhile, have provided support with net buying of ₹3,184.03 crore during the period, despite selling on Tuesday and Wednesday.
