Foreign Ministers of Japan and Australia to reach Delhi today for Quad: What’s to expect

The External Affairs Ministers of Japan and Australia are set to arrive in New Delhi on Monday ahead of the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting scheduled for May 26. India is hosting key partners for discussions focused on the Indo-Pacific region and emerging global security concerns.Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong is expected to reach the national capital late Monday evening. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Wong will participate in the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on Tuesday and later hold bilateral talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.

She is also scheduled to call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Seva Teerth at 5:15 pm and issue joint press statements after the meeting. Wong will meet Jaishankar at 6:30 pm following the Quad discussions.
Ahead of her visit, Wong described the Quad as an important partnership for ensuring peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific.
In a statement, she said, “While in India, I will hold the 17th Australia-India Foreign Ministers’ Framework Dialogue with my counterpart, Minister for External Affairs Dr S. Jaishankar. Australia and India’s partnership has never been more consequential.”Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi is also arriving in India on Monday for a two-day visit linked to the Quad meeting.

As per the MEA, Motegi will meet Jaishankar at Hyderabad House in New Delhi at 7 pm on Monday evening. He is also scheduled to call on Prime Minister Modi at 4:15 pm on Tuesday following the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.

The high-level congregation of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue brings together India, the United States, Australia and Japan. The meeting is taking place amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia which escalated after military strikes were launched by the US and Israel on Iran.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has already arrived in India ahead of the high-level discussions.

The Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting will be chaired by Jaishankar in New Delhi on Tuesday. The discussions are expected to focus on strengthening cooperation among Quad nations across key priority areas, reviewing the progress of ongoing initiatives and exchanging views on recent developments in the Indo-Pacific region as well as other global issues of shared concern.
