Year 2025 turned out to be a massive one for the world — geopolitically, socially, technologically, and environmentally. From changing power dynamics in global politics to historic cultural, economic, and climate-related changes, 2025 challenged countries to confront significant differences, growing threats, and also glimpses of optimism.
Here’s a list of some of the global events that defined 2025 – each providing a window into a year of upheaval, reinvention and high-stakes decisions.
India-Pakistan Conflict
Earlier this year, a war-like situation emerged between long-time adversaries India and Pakistan. The escalation began after a terrorist attack on April 22 in Pahalgam claimed the lives of 26 people. Following a brief period of hostilities, the two neighbouring countries announced a ceasefire on May 10.
Donald Trump’s Return to Power
Donald Trump’s re-election as president of the United States marked a significant shift in both domestic and international politics. His administration soon implemented restrictive trade policies, stringent immigration laws, and dissolved several federal offices — signifying a more assertive, inward-looking America.
Gaza Ceasefire
A prolonged conflict between Israel, supported by the United States, and Hamas came to a halt in Gaza with a ceasefire after intense pressure from the international community and widespread protests across Europe and Asia. Humanitarian supplies began arriving after hostages were released, but the region remains tense and the future uncertain.
UN Ocean Conference, France
From June 9-13, world leaders gathered to combat biodiversity loss and rising sea levels. The gathering attempted to finalise the ‘Nice Ocean Action Plan’ for marine protection, and to battle rising sea levels and conserve marine habitats.
Louvre Heist
In one of the most audacious crimes of the year, robbers broke into the famous museum and stole €88 million worth of royal jewels. The daring theft garnered international attention and spurred a discussion about security at the most popular museum in the world.

Lunar Exploration with CLPS
NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative carried cutting-edge scientific equipment to the Moon. Companies like Astrobotic, Intuitive Machines, and Firefly Aerospace specialise in lunar geology, environmental research, and testing new technology for human missions.
Japan’s M2/Resilience Mission
Japan’s M2/Resilience Mission 2025 was the second lunar landing mission by ispace Inc, which launched on January 15. The goal of the mission was to land a rover on the Moon to study the lunar surface, test water splitting for the creation of hydrogen and oxygen, and demonstrate autonomous rover technology and precise navigation.
NATO Summit, Netherlands
The NATO summit, which took place in the Netherlands on June 24-26, coincided with the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Key topics included defence production, Middle East stability, and pledges to military readiness. The summit was presided by Secretary General Mark Rutte and included a NATO Public Forum and a Defence Industry Forum.
COP30, Brazil
Held on November 10-21 in Brazil, COP30 pressed for ambitious emissions targets, focusing on sustainability and climate justice. With tensions from COP29, developing countries can anticipate more significant financial pledges from affluent ones.
G20 Summit, South Africa
An important milestone was reached on November 22-23, the first-ever G20 summit held in Africa. Leaders focused on inclusive growth, debt alleviation, and climate resilience under the slogan ‘Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability.’
Summer Deaflympics, Tokyo
The year 2025 has been a fascinating one for sports and worldwide events, including a broad selection of tournaments. From November 15-26, the 25th edition of the Deaflympics highlighted diversity through athletics. It marked the first time Japan hosted the Games.
Global AI Boom
Global euphoria was sparked by the surge in investments in artificial intelligence, but it also raised concerns over tech regulation, layoffs, and misinformation. AI-related expenditure is likely to reach around $1.5 trillion in 2025 and $2 trillion next year, according to US consultancy firm Gartner.
US Trade War
