Green Ammonia Push: L&T arm signs joint agreement with Japanese firm for Gujarat project

Larsen and Toubro Ltd. on Wednesday, August 13, said its wholly-owned subsidiary L&T Energy Greentech Ltd. has entered a joint development agreement with ITOCHU Corporation of Japan to develop and commercialise a 300 KTPA green ammonia project at Kandla in Gujarat.As per the agreement, the two companies will collaborate to develop the green ammonia facility, with ITOCHU planning to offtake the product for bunkering applications in Singapore. The partnership marks a significant step in advancing clean energy solutions for the maritime sector, the company said.

Last year, L&T said it acquired a sizeable land parcel at Kandla to develop green hydrogen and green ammonia projects.

“Through this joint development, our initiatives to introduce low-carbon ammonia to the maritime sector as an alternative zero-emission fuel will be reinforced,” Hiroyuki Tsubai, Executive Vice President, Member of the Board, President, Machinery Company of ITOCHU Corporation, said. With this collaboration, Kandla will become the principal production centre of green ammonia for ITOCHU’s bunkering operations in Singapore,” Tsubai added.”The partnership with ITOCHU reflects L&T’s larger vision of enabling a cleaner, greener future through sustainable business focus,” Subramanian Sarma, the deputy managing director and President, L&T, said.

L&T shares were trading 0.7% higher at ₹3,712.4 apiece at 12.15 pm on Wednesday. The stock has gained 6.2% in the past month.
