Hindu teacher’s house set on fire in Bangladesh amid fresh attacks on minorities

Date:

Amid continuing violence against religious minorities in Bangladesh, the house of a Hindu school teacher was set on fire in Sylhet’s Gowainghat upazila, triggering fresh concerns over the safety of the community. The targeted home belonged to Birendra Kumar Dey, popularly known as Jhunu sir, a teacher in the area, as per News18.
The blaze caused widespread panic among the family and nearby residents, though no injuries were reported.
Local residents said the attack has deepened anxiety among minority families in the region. A video of the incident, shared widely on social media, shows flames rapidly engulfing the house as family members rush to escape. Authorities are yet to determine how the fire was started, and no arrests have been made so far, as per News18.Pattern of arson attacks on Hindu homes

The Sylhet incident follows a series of similar attacks in recent weeks. A Hindu family’s house was set ablaze on December 28 in Dumritala village of Pirojpur district, as per a report by NDTV.

The incident occurred days after 29-year-old garment worker Dipu Chandra Das was lynched by a mob in Mymensingh on December 18 over alleged blasphemy, after which his body was also set on fire.

Earlier, on December 23, the homes of two expatriate Hindu families were torched in Raozan, Chittagong, as per a report by The Times of India (TOI). The attackers allegedly locked the families inside their houses before setting them on fire. Around eight people narrowly escaped, marking the sixth arson attack against the minority community in the area within days.

India–Bangladesh relations

The spate of attacks has unfolded amid political changes in Bangladesh and has drawn international attention.

Violence against Hindus has increased since last month, particularly following Dipu Chandra Das’s killing, which sparked a number of protests.

The developments have also strained New Delhi-Dhaka relations. India last week criticised the Muhammad Yunus–led interim government, accusing it of downplaying the communal nature of the crimes.

In response, the Yunus administration described reports of targeted attacks as attempts to “destroy communal harmony through false propaganda,” as per News18.
