India allows export of 100% broken rice as stockpiles soar

Date:

India has permitted the export of 100% broken rice, the government announced in a notification on Friday, after stockpiles surged to nearly nine times its official target at the start of February.

The export restriction, first introduced in September 2022 to stabilise domestic supplies, has now been eased to manage excess inventory. The decision is expected to help clear surplus stocks while supporting African nations that rely on broken rice for food security.

Additionally, it will benefit Asian animal feed producers and ethanol manufacturers that depend on the grain as a key raw material.
