The Union Cabinet, chaired by PM Modi, has approved the nutrient-based subsidy (NBS) rates for phosphatic and potassic (P&K) fertilisers for the Kharif 2025 season, covering the period from April 1 to September 30, 2025. The move aims to ensure that farmers continue to receive essential fertilisers at subsidised and affordable rates. The government has allocated ₹37,216.15 crore for the subsidy, which is approximately ₹13,000 crore higher than the budgetary requirement for the Rabi 2024-25 season, it said in a statement.Key approvals and benefits
Subsidised fertilisers: Farmers will have access to P&K fertilisers, including NPKS grades, at reasonable prices.
Freight subsidy on SSP: The existing freight subsidy on single super phosphate (SSP) has been extended to the Kharif 2025 season.
Balanced nutrient supply: The subsidy ensures that farmers receive necessary nutrients, contributing to soil health and improved harvests.
“The approval of subsidy rates for P&K fertilisers is yet another example of the importance attached by the government to the agriculture sector and Indian farmers,” the government said in a statement.Implementation strategyThe NBS subsidy will be provided to fertiliser manufacturers and importers at approved rates to keep prices stable for farmers. India currently offers subsidies on 28 grades of P&K fertilisers under the NBS scheme, which has been in place since April 1, 2010.Given fluctuations in international prices of key fertiliser inputs like urea, DAP, MOP, and sulphur, the Centre has factored in recent trends to ensure price rationalisation. By approving the new NBS rates, the government aims to secure fertiliser availability while maintaining food security for the nation.ALSO READ: CNBC-TV18 newsbreak confirmed: Cabinet approves ₹22,919 crore electronics PLI scheme(Edited by : Shoma Bhattacharjee)
