India faces ‘catch-22’ as Hormuz tensions test ties with US, Iran and Gulf: Experts

In a conversation with CNBC-TV18, former Indian diplomat Rajiv Dogra said India is in a difficult diplomatic position as it tries to balance ties with the United States, Iran, and Gulf countries amid the escalating tensions. He noted that while India values its strategic partnership with the US, it also has long-standing civilisational ties with Iran and significant economic interests in the Gulf. Dogra said this creates a “catch-22” for India, as taking a clear side could risk damaging key relationships. Omair Anas said Iran is unlikely to ease pressure on the Strait of Hormuz without guarantees that the US and Israel will not attack again and that its civilian nuclear programme will be protected. He added that Tehran is signalling energy-importing countries, including India, to push for de-escalation to avoid disruptions to global oil supply.
