India hits record annual defence production in FY25, up 18%: Rajnath Singh

Date:

Union Defence Minister on Saturday, August 9, said that India saw the highest defence production in FY25, touching a record ₹1.5 lakh crore, up 18% from the previous year and a whopping 90% from FY20.  The defence production for FY24 and FY20 was ₹1.27 lakh crore and ₹79,071 crore, respectively.Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) and other PSUs accounted for about 77% of total production, while the private sector contributed 23% for financial year 2024-25, according to Defence Ministry. However, private sector contribution increased by 2% from 21% in FY24 to 23% in FY25.The minister called it a “collective efforts” of the Department of Defence Production (DPP) which oversees design and development of military equipment and platforms as well as other stakeholders including Defence PSUs and manufacturers, and the private industry for their contribution.”This upward trajectory is a clear indicator of India’s strengthening defence industrial base,” Singh wrote in social media post. The ministry announced that the growth not only helps India become less dependent on other countries and export to other countries as well. The same year (FY25) also saw India’s defence exports touch its highest ₹23,622 crore, up by about ₹2,539 crore or 12% from ₹21,083 crore in FY24.”This record-setting achievement underscores the growing momentum of the Government’s push to self-reliance in defence manufacturing under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative,” the ministry wrote. The ministry credited the growth from both public and private sector to far-reaching policy reforms, greater ease of doing business, and a strategic focus on indigenisation over the past decade. The overall production of DPSUs and the private sector has increased by 16 per cent and 28 per cent, respectively, in FY 2024-25.India showcased its defence capabilities in action during Operation Sindoor, India’s response to terror attack in Pahalgam in April this year. Indian Air Force (IAF) Chief Air Chief Marshal AP Singh recently said India’s S-400 air defence system shot down five Pakistani fighter jets and a large surveillance aircraft during Operation Sindoor. Also Read: Uttarkashi flash floods: Army canine teams support search operations in Harsil and Dharali
