India has made significant headway in its trade negotiations with the United States, and a deal could be close to taking shape, sources told CNBC-TV18.
According to people familiar with the discussions, both sides are engaged in regular and robust negotiations, with Indian and US officials remaining in close and continuous contact. The talks have progressed steadily, raising hopes of a positive outcome in the near future.
Sources said Indian and US negotiators stayed closely engaged even as India was finalising its trade agreement with the European Union, underlining that discussions with Washington have moved in parallel and remain a key priority. Officials emphasised that trade negotiations are typically conducted with multiple partners simultaneously and that progress with one bloc does not come at the cost of another.
The recently concluded India-EU deal, sources stressed, was not pursued in a spirit of one-upmanship. The United States continues to be an equally important market for India, both economically and strategically, and efforts to conclude a bilateral trade agreement with Washington remain firmly on track.
“Indian officials have their eyes on the ball,” sources said, adding that the focus is now on getting the India-US deal “across the finish line”. While details of the potential agreement remain under wraps, the tone of negotiations is described as constructive, with both sides keen to address outstanding issues.
The developments come at a time when India is actively expanding its trade footprint through multiple bilateral and regional agreements, as it seeks to boost exports, strengthen supply chains, and deepen economic ties with major global partners.
