According to UNESCO, around 250 million children still do not attend school, and 617 million children and adolescents lack basic reading and math skills. Additionally, less than 40% of girls in sub-Saharan Africa complete lower secondary school, and approximately four million refugee children and youth are out of school.
A country can only grow and break the cycle of poverty if every citizen, regardless of gender, has access to quality education and lifelong learning opportunities.

January 24 was officially declared the International Day of Education through a resolution passed by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on December 3, 2018. The first celebration of this day took place on January 24, 2019.
