Iran says it is hitting US-linked sites in self-defence, warns of swift response

Date:

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, said the country’s armed forces are carrying out what he described as “self-defence strikes” against sites allegedly being used by the United States to launch attacks on civilian shipping and violate an existing ceasefire. In a statement on X, Araghchi said any hostile action against Iran would be met with an “immediate and decisive response.”

The Iranian foreign minister also argued that additional military action would not achieve outcomes that sanctions and previous conflicts had failed to deliver. “What sanctions and war failed to achieve won’t be won with more war,” he said.

The remarks come amid heightened regional tensions and concerns over the risk of again broader escalation involving Iran, the United States and allied forces. There was no immediate response from US officials to Araghchi’s comments.

Earlier, in day, Kuwait said it had suspended commercial flights after an Iranian drone attack hit the country’s airport, injuring a number of people hours after Iran and the United States traded missile strikes in the region, reported AP.

The attacks came after Iran stopped communicating with mediators about extending a ceasefire in the war with the US and Israel, according to reports Tuesday from two semiofficial Iranian news agencies, AP reported. US President Donald Trump disputed that claim and said talks were continuing.

Late Tuesday, the US military said it had launched strikes on an Iranian military facility in retaliation for Iranian missiles fired at Kuwait and Bahrain.

It said Iran had fired two missiles at Kuwait that fell apart en route, while US and Bahraini forces intercepted missiles aimed at Bahrain. US Central Command also said it had “downed multiple drones” targeting American forces in Kuwait.
