Islamabad suicide attack kills at least 31, injures 169 at Shia Mosque in Pakistan

Date:

A suicide bombing at a Shia mosque in Pakistan’s capital Islamabad has killed at least 31 people and injured 169 others during a regular prayer session on Friday, February 6, news agency AP reported citing officials. Death tolls could increase further as authorities reported several of the injured were in critical condition.

The blast took place in the Tarlai area on the outskirts of the city when an attacker detonated explosives near the entrance of the mosque.

However, it is not clear yet who is behind the attack as no militant group has claimed responsibility.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have condemned the attack. “Targeting innocent civilians is a crime against humanity…The nation stands with the affected families in this difficult time,” Zardari said.

The area is now cordoned off for investigation and the injured were shifted to nearby hospitals including the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences for emergency care and treatment.

The US embassy in Pakistan expressed condolences and condemned the attack in a statement.

“Acts of terror and violence against civilians and places of worship are unacceptable.  The people of Pakistan deserve safety, dignity, and the ability to practice their faith without fear,” the statement read, adding that US will support peace and security efforts.
