Israel-Iran war: What the world leaders said about escalating tensions in West Asia

Date:

Israel carried out a series of strikes in Iran on Friday, hitting nuclear and military sites. Following Israel’s biggest-ever military strike, Iran launched a retaliatory attack against its longstanding enemy on Friday night. In retaliation for Israel’s ‘Operation Rising Lion,’ Iran launched fresh attacks under ‘Operation True Promise 3’ early Saturday, after a night of escalating tensions in West Asia.
The confrontation resulted in waves of missile launches from both sides, raising world concerns about the possibility of greater regional instability.
On Saturday, the Indian Embassy in Iran said that External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held a telephonic conversation with Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, where he conveyed his deep concern. On X, the Embassy wrote, “External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had a phone conversation with FM Seyed Abbas Araghchi this evening. EAM conveyed the deep concern of the international community at the turn of events. He urged avoidance of any escalatory steps and an early return to diplomacy.”

Earlier, the official spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal, also expressed concern about the situation between the two nations.

On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for the restoration of peace and said, “Received a phone call from PM @netanyahu of Israel. He briefed me on the evolving situation. I shared India’s concerns and emphasised the need for early restoration of peace and stability in the region.”

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said the country’s armed forces were ready to face Israel. On X, he wrote, “The Zionist regime has made a big mistake, a grave error, and committed a reckless act. By God’s grace, the consequences of this will bring that regime to ruin. The Iranian nation won’t permit the blood of its valued martyrs to go unavenged, nor will it ignore the violation of its airspace. Our Armed Forces are ready, and the country’s officials and all the people are behind the Armed Forces.”

“The Zionist regime will not escape safely from the heinous crime they’ve committed,” he said in a video address.

European Commission urged de-escalation and diplomacy following Israel’s strikes on Iranian nuclear sites and Iran’s drone counterstrike on Israel. In a post on X, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called for preventing further escalation.

“Spoke with President @Isaac_Herzog concerning the escalating situation in the Middle East. I reiterated Israel’s right to defend itself and protect its people. At the same time, preserving regional stability is vital. I urge all parties to act with maximum restraint and work to de-escalate the situation. Diplomatic efforts are crucial to preventing further escalation,” she added.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump said, “Two months ago, I gave Iran a 60-day ultimatum to ‘make a deal’.”

“They should have done it! Today is day 61. I told them what to do, but they just couldn’t get there. Now, they have, perhaps, a second chance!” he added in his Truth Social post.

On Friday, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer urged “all parties to step back” and urgently decrease tensions. “The reports of these strikes are concerning, and we urge all parties to step back and reduce tensions urgently. Escalation serves no one in the region. Stability in the Middle East must be the priority, and we are engaging partners to de-escalate. Now is the time for restraint, calm and a return to diplomacy.”
