Trump had earlier made similar comments at the Davos summit in January, stating that without American intervention in World War II, “you’d be speaking German and a little Japanese.” Charles’ response echoed that tone but with a historical twist rooted in Anglo-French competition.
The King continued with a series of light-hearted jokes. Referring to recent structural changes at the White House, he noted the ‘readjustments’ to the East Wing, linked to Trump’s reported plans for a new $400 million for a new ballroom.
He added, “I am sorry to say that we British, of course, made our own attempt at real estate redevelopment of the White House in 1814,” recalling when British troops set fire to the building during the War of 1812.
He also joked about one of the most defining events in American history, saying the dinner was “a very considerable improvement on the Boston Tea Party.” The remark referred to the 1773 protest against British taxation.
Trump, in his response, focused on domestic humour. “I want to congratulate Charles on having made a fantastic speech today at Congress,” he said.
“He got the Democrats to stand — I’ve never been able to do that.”
As part of the visit, King Charles also presented Trump with a bell from HMS Trump, a British submarine launched in 1944. “May it stand as a testimony to our nations’ shared history and shining future. And should you ever need to get hold of us, well, just give us a ring,” he said.
The four-day visit is being seen as an effort to maintain steady ties between the UK and the US amid ongoing geopolitical differences, including tensions related to Iran.
