Lady Gaga’s Rio concert nearly struck by bomb in foiled radical extremist attack

Brazilian authorities have thwarted a planned bomb attack targeting pop star Lady Gaga’s historic concert at Copacabana Beach, which drew a crowd of over 2 million people on Saturday, officials said.The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro, in coordination with the federal Justice Ministry, uncovered the plot in the days leading up to the show. The attackers reportedly belonged to an extremist group that promoted hate speech and encouraged the radicalisation of teenagers through violent and self-harming content as a form of online social bonding.
Authorities said the group had been actively recruiting participants—including minors—to carry out coordinated acts of violence using improvised explosive devices and Molotov cocktails.
“The suspects were recruiting participants, including minors, to carry out coordinated attacks using improvised explosives and Molotov cocktails,” the police said in an official statement.According to Rio city officials, approximately 2.1 million people gathered on the iconic beach to attend the American singer’s performance.

Investigators revealed that the group behind the plan had posed as fans of Lady Gaga, identifying themselves as members of the singer’s global fan base known as the “Little Monsters.”The Justice Ministry’s Cyber Operations Lab launched the operation following a tip-off from Rio state police intelligence, which uncovered digital networks using coded language and extremist symbols to incite violence among teenagers.

A man identified as the group’s leader was arrested in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul on charges of illegal possession of a firearm. In Rio de Janeiro, a teenager was taken into custody for possessing child sexual abuse material.

Police executed over a dozen search and seizure warrants across multiple states, including Rio de Janeiro, Mato Grosso, Rio Grande do Sul, and São Paulo, as part of the sweeping investigation.

The foiled plot has sparked renewed concern over the role of online communities in radicalising youth and the growing need for early detection of extremist behaviour on social media platforms.
