Modi-Trump bilateral talks to focus on trade, energy, and defence

Date:

Washington DC is set to witness a crucial bilateral meeting between US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with key trade and strategic interests on the table. The discussions are expected to focus on reducing the trade deficit, boosting energy cooperation, and strengthening defence ties between the two nations. One of the primary agenda items is trade, with the US seeking to narrow the trade deficit with India. Reports suggest that the Indian government has already prepared a list of 10-12 product lines where it could offer concessions to the US, including electronic devices, electronic products, and medical devices.

In the energy sector, the US is likely to push India to purchase more oil and gas, reducing its reliance on Russian energy. In response, India could propose long-term liquefied natural gas (LNG) contracts with US energy companies, further deepening energy ties between the two nations.

Defence cooperation is also expected to be a focal point of the discussions. The Indian government has been considering acquiring more Hercules transport aircraft from the US, along with surveillance aircraft for the Indian Navy. India is keen to continue its collaboration on the GE F414 engines, which are set to be manufactured in India, enhancing the country’s defence capabilities. The possibility of a limited trade deal, a topic that had been discussed during Trump’s first administration, is also on the table. Both sides could aim to outline a roadmap to finalise a comprehensive trade deal in the next seven to eight months.
