Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s private residence was set on fire, according to News18.
An indefinite curfew is in place in Nepal’s capital Kathmandu and other cities.
The country’s youth who are leading the demonstrations demanding accountability from the government believe demonstrations must continue to honour the 19 lives lost during an open fire the previous day, Reuters reported.
On Monday (September 8) evening, Nepal’s home minister Ramesh Lekhak submitted his resignation to PM Oli during an emergency cabinet meeting at the official residence in Baluwatar, out of moral responsibility.
Widespread protests against the government intensified in the Himalayan country after its government moved to ban 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, X, and YouTube, last week, stating they have failed to register to operate in Nepal.
Many have also taken to social media to express their frustration with the government.
“Nepal deserves better. Nepalese deserve better. We deserve clean roads. We deserve proper healthcare facilities, especially in rural areas. We deserve clean air. We deserve job opportunities. People who are creating job opportunities deserve to know that their taxes are making positive contributions to the development of the nation,” Tenzin Lhakyi, social media influencer and actor, posted online.
“As a regular taxpayer, I have wondered at times myself. Where does it all go? We deserve a lot more than what we have received,” she added.
Meanwhile, the Indian government said it is monitoring the situation closely and advised Indian nationals in Nepal to exercise caution and adhere to the steps and guidelines issued by authorities.
“As a close friend and neighbour, we hope that all concerned will exercise restraint and address any issues through peaceful means and dialogue,” the Indian government said. It also sent condolences to those who lost their lives in the protest.
