PM rooftop solar scheme gets more to speed up implementation

Date:

The Budget has allocated ₹22,000 crore towards the PM Surya Garh Mufti Bijli Yojana, the government scheme that provides subsidy to install solar rooftop plants on one crore (mostly poor) households. The allocation in the current budget is ₹5,000 crore more than the revised estimates for 2025-26, but a ₹2,000 crore increase over the budget estimate of 2025-26.

This shows that the funds allocated towards the scheme last year could not be fully spent.

The scheme was launched in February 2024 with a total outlay of ₹75,021 crore and is to conclude in 2026-27. However, by December 9, 2025, a total of 19,45,758 RTS systems were installed across the country, benefitting 24,35,196 households. This, therefore, works out to 19.45 per cent completion, with 17 months to go.

The actual spend on the programme in 2024-25 was ₹7817.61 crore and the revised estimate for 2025-26 crore is stated as ₹17,000 crore—adding to ₹24,817 crore.

However, in a reply to the Rajya Sabha on December 9, 2025, the government showed that the total central financial assistance provided under the scheme was ₹13,926 crore.

This indicates that when the actual number for 2025-26 comes, it may be much less than ₹17,000 crore.
