Polish president approves NATO troop deployment in Poland

Date:

Polish President Karol Nawrocki on Sunday (September 14) approved the deployment of NATO troops in Poland after Russian drone incursions into Polish airspace last week.

Chinese and Turkish state media reported the development citing Polish National Security Bureau.

Nawrocki has signed a resolution consenting to “the presence on the territory of Poland of a component of foreign forces from NATO as reinforcement of Poland as part of Operation Eastern Sentry.”

On Wednesday (September 10), Poland shot down the Russian drones in its airspace with the backing of military aircraft from its NATO allies and maintains that the incursions are “no mistake.”

The NATO alliance further launched operation Eastern Sentry to protect its member from Russian forces. After Poland, another NATO member Romania too reported similar incursions from Russian drones.

Russia, which said the incursions were not targeted, views NATO has a threat that is slowly gaining dominance in post-Soviet territories. Russian leader Vladimir Putin, earlier this month, said his country was forced to wage war against Ukraine in 2022 as a security response to the NATO alliance expanding.

“We must, as NATO, make clear our resolve and our ability to defend our territory, and that is exactly what Eastern Sentry is designed to do,” Secretary-General Mark Rutte told a press conference in Brussels.

What did Trump opine?

Barring one surprising comment from US President Donald Trump stating it could have been a mistake, the US took a hard stand against the incursion at the United Nations. It called the airspace violations “alarming” and vowed to “defend every inch of NATO territory,”  according to Reuters.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio condemned the incursion and called it “unacceptable.”

He said if evidence shows that Russia targeted the drones to enter Poland, it would be a “highly escalatory move.”
