SCO meet: Jaishankar calls for ‘open exchange of ideas’ with China amid Dalai Lama succession tensions

Date:

External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar has highlighted the importance of “open exchange” of views between India and China to Chinese Vice President Han Zheng, during his visit to the neighbouring country in over five years.Jaishankar met Zheng in Beijing on July 14 as he is slated to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (CFM) in Tianjin.
The Foreign Minister stated that during the evolving geopolitical situation globally, it is significant to have open and free exchange of views between the two neighbouring countries.
“As neighboring nations and major economies, an open exchange of views and perspectives between India and China is very important,” Jaishankar said in his opening remarks as he met the Chinese VP, adding that he looks forward to have such discussions during his visit.

Jaishankar also mentioned that the bilateral relations between India and China have been improving since October last year when Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in Kazan.

“We have marked the 75th anniversary of the establishment of our diplomatic relations. The resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is also widely appreciated in India. Continued normalisation of our ties can produce mutually beneficial outcomes,” Jaishankar added.

After holding the meeting with the Chinese VP, Jaishankar held a meeting with SCO Secretary-General (SG) Nurlan Yermekbayev in Beijing where he discussed the contribution and importance of the Organisation, along with the measures to modernise its working.

Dalai Lama’s succession concerns

As the SCO FM meeting is scheduled to be held, Chinese Embassy spokesperson in India on July 13 called for refrain from comments on Tibet and Dalai Lama’s succession, stating that Tibet related issue is a “thorn” in the bilateral relations of the two countries, which is becoming a “burden” for India.

Spokesperson Yu Jing took to X (formerly Twitter) to raise alarms around the region’s issues using a Chinese name for it.  “In reality, Xizang-related issue is a thorn in China-India relations and has become a burden for India. Playing the “Xizang card” will definitely end up shooting oneself in the foot.”

“The reincarnation and succession of the Dalai Lama is inherently an internal affair of China, brooking no interference of any external forces,” she said, adding that the Indian government has made political commitments to China by recognising Xizang as an “Autonomous Region” of China and not allowing Tibetans to engage in political activities against China in India.

Significance of Jaishankar’s visit

The SCO FM meeting holds importance for India as during the SCO meeting of the Defence Ministers, the Organisation did not mention the Pahalgam terror attacks of April 22 in its joint statement, which resulted in the Defence Minister Rajnath Singh refusing to be its signatory.

It will be significant to witness what are the discussions being held at the meeting and whether the SCO will call out terrorism and its perpetrators.
