Stranded Indian in Nepal appeals for help, describes dire situation

An Indian national stranded in violence-hit Nepal cried for help as the political crisis deepens in the Himalayan nation. The girl named Upasna Gill who was in Pokhara to host a volley ball league has urged Indian embassy to rescue her and other people.She has shared a video narrating her plight. She said that the hotel where she was staying has been burnt down and all her belongings were in the room. She has alleged that tourists were also not being spared. She has repeatedly urged the Indian embassy and others for help.

Gauri K, who had gone on a Kailash-Mansarovar expedition with her sister, said she was stuck along with a large number of Indians at a hotel.
“Today we had a flight, but due to unrest in Kathmandu, all airline companies have cancelled their services. I am now held up in this hotel,” Gauri, a Chennai resident working in Bengaluru, told PTI.Describing Tuesday’s situation, Gauri added, “There was absolute anarchy everywhere. Smoke was billowing from buildings torched by mobs. Though a curfew was in place, youths were roaming freely, and we also heard gunshots intermittently.” She said Wednesday was relatively peaceful due to the curfew, but “gun-totting students were still roaming on the roads.” The hotel staff warned guests not to venture out under any circumstances, citing ‘mobocracy’ dominating Kathmandu.

The student-led “Gen Z” protests in Nepal that began against a government ban on social media expanded into a larger campaign reflecting growing public criticism of the KP Sharma Oli dispensation and the country’s political elite over alleged corruption and apathy towards the common people.

Prime Minister Oli resigned in the face of violent protests for a second day, even as the ban on social media was lifted late on Monday night. The demonstrators stormed many government buildings and set the parliament and homes of several high-profile leaders ablaze, a day after 19 people died in violence.

The Indian government has advised nationals in Nepal to remain cautious and adhere to local authorities in the wake of violent anti-corruption demonstrations in the country. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) instructed Indians to defer travel plans to Nepal till situation stabilises.

The Indian embassy in Kathmandu has advised Indians in Nepal to stay sheltered and follow guidelines issued by local authorities. The embassy has also circulated two telephone numbers (+977 – 980 860 2881 and +977 – 981 032 6134) that Indian can reach out for assistance in emergency situation.
