The government body’s Director General Dinesh Bhatt said that further studies are ongoing into the floods that also washed away the Nepal-China Miteri or Friendship Bridge.
“We are studying the real cause of the disaster with the help of experts. A supraglacial lake is created on the surface of glaciers, especially in debris-covered regions. Most of the time, they begin as small meltwater ponds which expand over time and sometimes merge to form a larger supraglacial lake, reported Reuters, citing experts.
As of July 10, nine people have been reported dead while 20 others are missing, as per PTI. 150 individuals have been rescued so far.
“We are fully deployed in the field. We rescued more than 150 individuals, including 127 foreign nationals, and airlifted them to Kathmandu,” Arjun Paudel, chief district officer of Rasuwa, was quoted as saying by the Kathmandu Post newspaper, as per PTI.
China’s Xinhua news agency stated that about 11 people were missing on the Chinese side or the mountainous border region, as per Reuters.
Rescue efforts are underway to locate the missing people, as per Nepal police. Further details are awaited on the situation.
