Texas Democrat moves to impeach Trump over Gaza ‘takeover’ remarks

Al Green, a Democratic Congressman from Texas, on Wednesday announced on the house floor that he is introducing articles on impeachment against US President Donald Trump following his remarks that the US would “take over” Gaza. During his floor speech, Green said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere, and injustice in Gaza is a threat to justice in the United States of America.”

Green said the movement to impeach the president has “begun. I rise to announce that I will bring articles of impeachment against the president for dastardly deeds proposed and dastardly deeds done.”

Green has launched many unsuccessful impeachment efforts during Trump first term from 2017 to 2021. Trump was impeached twice when the Democrats held the majority in the house and the senate, but Trump was eventually acquitted by the senate on both occasions.The second impeachment, for Trump’s role in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riots, saw 10 House Republicans break ranks to vote to remove him from office.

Politico noted that Green’s latest attempt at impeaching — using procedural tactics to bypass US House leaxership and committees — has few takers among the Democrats, who are in the minority in both the house and senate.

In fact, California Congressman Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.), the third-ranking House Democrat, told Politico that impeachment is not currently a priority for the Democratic caucus.
