US President Donald Trump on Thursday ordered a sharp escalation in maritime engagement, directing the US Navy to “shoot and kill” any vessel found laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said there should be “no hesitation” in acting against such threats, indicating a more aggressive stance to secure the critical global shipping route.

He added that US mine sweepers are already active in the region, clearing the waterway, and signalled that operations will be intensified further.

The move comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions. Despite Trump extending the ceasefire with Iran, peace talks appear to have stalled, with both sides hardening their positions.

Reports of ship seizures in the Strait of Hormuz and the absence of Iranian negotiators have kept tensions elevated, adding a layer of uncertainty to global markets.

Oil prices have also reacted sharply, extending gains for a fourth straight session on supply concerns. Brent crude has climbed past $100 per barrel, stoking fresh inflation worries and weighing on investor sentiment.
