Trump says US will return to ‘very strong military action’ if Iran talks don’t succeed

Date:

US President Donald Trump told Axios in an exclusive interview that he is prepared to resume “very strong military action” against Iran if the ongoing negotiations fail.Trump said he decided to pause US strikes on Iran to give diplomacy another chance, adding that the current negotiations are focused on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and relaunching talks on a comprehensive nuclear deal.

“We are in very deep talks with Iran. If they don’t work out, we will go back to very strong military action,” Trump told Axios.
When asked how long he was willing to give diplomacy, Trump said, “Not much time. Either it goes fast or not at all.”Trump told Axios that he decided to pause the strikes on Friday after countries mediating the talks urged him to give negotiations another chance. He added that he believes Iran wants to reach a deal.

Explaining his decision, Trump said, “Nothing gained, nothing lost,” adding that oil prices fell and stock markets rose after he paused the attacks.

Trump also told Axios that he will meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Tuesday. “I am going to talk to Bibi about the fact that if I weren’t president, Iran would have had nuclear weapons by now and Israel would have been destroyed,” he said.
