Trump sees Iran deal ‘soon’ but ups threat to energy infrastructure

Date:

Donald Trump on Monday stepped up pressure on Iran to reach a deal to end the war, warning that failure to do so could lead to strikes on the country’s key energy and power infrastructure.

In a post on Truth SocialTrump said the United States was in “serious discussions” with a “new, and more reasonable” regime in Iran, adding that a deal would “probably” be reached soon, citing “great progress” in talks.

However, he warned that if an agreement is not reached shortly — and if the Strait of Hormuz is not reopened — the US would “completely obliterate” Iran’s electric generating plants, oil wells and Kharg Island.

Trump said Washington had so far refrained from targeting these sites, adding that any future action would be in retaliation for Americans killed over what he described as the previous regime’s “47-year ‘reign of terror’”.

The remarks come amid intensifying conflict in West Asia, with the US-Israel war on Iran now in its second month. Tehran has closed the Strait of Hormuz to what it calls its “enemies”, raising concerns over global energy supplies.

Trump also said the US had around 3,000 potential targets in Iran and set a 10-day deadline for Tehran to reopen the key shipping route. In a separate interview, he flagged the possibility of targeting Kharg Island, through which a majority of Iran’s oil exports pass, adding: “We have a lot of options.”

The escalating tensions have pushed crude oil prices above $120 per barrel, underscoring the centrality of Kharg Island to Iran’s oil economy and the broader global energy market.
